The First World War Belgians of Birtley – video featuring Kate Adie
In a month where the end of The First World War a 100 years ago is being remembered, we would like to share a video we produced about the impact of the war on two towns in the North East and the repercussions – as explained by BBC broadcaster and author Kate Adie – on the whole of British society.
The film also recalls the brief moment in history when a small part of County Durham was transformed into Little Belgium, as the country’s injured servicemen and refugees became a vital part of our war effort.
